Chapter 9:  Face the Dragon!

Picture
Who dares to enter my lair?

You wish to challenge me?  This will be amusing.

I see you have the seven Gems of Mastery.  You must have some skill, but that is of no worry to me!   None can conquer me!

Hero!
Now is the time you have trained for!
Remember all you have learned:  Breathing, buzzing, tonguing, notes, and rhythms!  You will need them all!

To prepare, download and print the music below.

Notice that the music has two flat signs next to the bass clef.  This is called a "key signature" and tells you that all B's should be played as Bb and all E's should be played as Eb.  Ask your teacher for more details.

Before striking at the dragon directly, I suggest you study its movements first!  Below is a "Trombone Only" audio clip.  Listen to this clip.  I suggest you first listen while doing only slide positions (no playing), then try playing along.  Once you have mastered that, confront the dragon!

Trombone Only Audio:

The Final Showdown

To confront the dragon, start the audio clip below.  There will be a count-in (1, 2, 3, 4) and then you will begin playing the music you have downloaded and printed.  There will be an accompaniment playing with you.  To defeat the dragon, you must:
  • Play with good posture and hold your trombone correctly.
  • Play with lots of air and a fairly good sound.
  • Play nearly all of the notes and rhythms correctly (correct slide positions too!).
  • Tongue each note so that it has a nice crisp beginning.
It may be a good idea to have a parent, friend, or your teacher listen to you play!

If you don't succeed the first few times, don't give up and keep practicing!
